Causeway Geotech have recently completed extensive onshore and nearshore ground investigation works at Port Talbot in South Wales. These works will inform the geotechnical design of a proposed new green energy hub for our valued client, Associated British Ports. Both our jack-up barges were equipped with dual purpose roto-sonic drilling rigs from Royal Eijkelkamp to successfully achieve excellent production for the marine campaign. Our team completed works ahead of the programme in a challenging and extensive scope. Despite the difficult ground conditions, the progress and quality of information returned were a testament to our approach. The combination of using optimum drilling methods, the most suitable rigs, and the highly skilled and trained ground investigation drillers helped in this regard. Working in collaboration with ABP and their design team, Mott MacDonald, the onshore works saw us agree scope adjustments on a proactive basis, replacing cable percussion boreholes with sonic drilling to overcome the challenges presented by the extremely dense anthropogenic strata. Having deployed two roto-sonic drilling rigs from our own land drilling fleet we were supported by an additional two from our trusted supply chain partners. This approach afforded the project team the benefit of applying the correct techniques to retrieve the best quality data while not compromising the overall programme.

Team Opinions
We are proud of our achievements on this extensive project and look forward to contributing further to the exciting plans that are evolving to transform this historical industrial hub into a leading deep water port, servicing the offshore renewable sector. ABP’s Project Development Manager, Joshua Bush, commented, “Associated British Ports (ABP) is pleased that Causeway Geotech have successfully completed the onshore and nearshore ground investigation works in Port Talbot. Their team’s expertise has allowed the integrated team to deliver a complex and challenging
ground investigation campaign. This important work being completed shows ABP’s Future Port Talbot programme commitment to innovation and collaboration, paving the way for a sustainable future in the offshore renewable sector.”
Causeway Geotech’s Project Manager, Neil Haggan, added, “This was a challenging project which was delivered smoothly thanks to myriad factors, not least our excellent collaborative working relationship with ABP and their delivery partners, as well as the sterling efforts of our talented site team. It was a pleasure to be involved with the project and we look forward to working with this wider team again in the future.”
